Lucknow: A commemorative programme marking 51 years since the Emergency of 1975 was organized at the official residence of Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi at 8 Kalidas Marg, Lucknow. The event, observed as “Constitution Remembrance Day”, paid tribute to individuals who opposed the Emergency and worked to uphold democratic values during one of the most challenging periods in independent India’s political history.
The programme was attended by Member of the Legislative Council Pawan Singh Chauhan as the chief guest, while Anil Bajpai was present as the special guest.
During the ceremony, several individuals who had participated in movements and activities aimed at safeguarding democratic institutions and civil liberties during the Emergency were felicitated for their contributions. Those honoured included Rajendra Tiwari, Vishram Sagar Singh, Ganesh Rai, Jaidev Pahwa, Sharad Malviya, Rakesh Nigam, Ajay Kumar Sharma, Veena Verma, Hari Shyam Rastogi, Madhukar Mishra, Vipin Bakshi, Ajit Singh, Santosh Bajpai, Dinesh Agnihotri, Dinesh Pratap Singh, and Dilip Das.
Speakers at the event reflected on the experiences of the Emergency period, discussing restrictions on civil liberties and the challenges faced by those who opposed the suspension of democratic processes. They emphasized the importance of educating younger generations about this chapter of Indian history and the sacrifices made by individuals who stood in defence of democratic values.
The programme also served as an occasion to remember the contributions of democracy activists and reaffirm commitment to constitutional principles, civil rights and democratic governance.
Participants and distinguished guests reiterated the importance of preserving democratic institutions and ensuring that future generations remain aware of the significance of constitutional freedoms and citizen rights.
The event concluded with tributes to those who contributed to the protection of democratic ideals and a collective pledge to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
